GPOs, SYSVOL and permissions mismatch

Have you ever seen the following error when in the Group Policy Management Console?  Clicking OK is supposed to fix the issue but in my experience, it never does.

From what I can tell from a quick search, it looks like this will occur if you do not have the permission to change the security settings of a given GPO and the solutions, or potential solutions, to resolve the error range far and wide.

Personally, I’ve been able to resolve the problem in this way:

  • Open the GPMC
  • Highlight the problem GPO
  • Click the Delegation tab
  • Click Add
  • Give a user or a group Read permissions and click OK
  • Then remove the permissions you just assigned.

I’m not sure if this works everywhere, honestly I doubt it does, but its easy and worth a shot.
